索尔兹伯里 指南

索尔兹伯里 门票指南

Few English cities carry as much weight in as compact a form as Salisbury. Set in the Wiltshire chalk downland where the rivers Avon, Nadder, Bourne, and Wylye converge, it is a place whose skyline has been defined for eight centuries by a single, extraordinary fact: the tallest cathedral spire in Britain, rising to 123 metres above the surrounding water meadows. That spire is not merely a landmark; it is the reason the city exists in its present location at all, having been moved from the hilltop settlement of Old Sarum in the thirteenth century to make way for the new cathedral and the planned medieval streets that still give the centre its grid-like character.

The cathedral itself rewards time rather than a quick circuit. Inside, the building holds one of the four surviving original copies of Magna Carta, sealed in 1215, which sits in the Chapter House alongside a frieze of Old Testament scenes carved in the same century. The cloisters are the largest of any English cathedral, and the clock mechanism in the north aisle is among the oldest working examples in the world, dating to around 1386. These are not incidental curiosities; they are the reason Salisbury draws visitors who might otherwise pass through Wiltshire on their way to Stonehenge, which lies roughly thirteen miles to the north.
