Set in the Wiltshire chalk downland where the rivers Avon, Nadder, Bourne, and Wylye converge, it is a place whose skyline has been defined for eight centuries by a single, extraordinary fact: the tallest cathedral spire in Britain, rising to 123 metres above the surrounding water meadows. The cloisters are the largest of any English cathedral, and the clock mechanism in the north aisle is among the oldest working examples in the world, dating to around 1386.
