Ponta Delgada sits on the southern coast of São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores archipelago, roughly equidistant between Lisbon and the eastern seaboard of North America. The covered market, the Mercado da Graça, draws locals every morning and gives a clear sense of what grows on this island: pineapples cultivated in heated greenhouses, passion fruit, yams, and cheeses from the interior parishes. Beyond the waterfront promenade, the city gives way quickly to the rest of São Miguel, and that transition is part of what makes Ponta Delgada unusual among Portuguese cities. Within forty minutes in almost any direction, the urban fabric dissolves entirely into crater lakes, hydrothermal valleys, and ridgelines thick with hydrangeas.
