Playa del Carmen sits along the Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo, roughly an hour south of Cancún by road, and it has spent the past three decades transforming from a small fishing village into one of Mexico's most visited resort towns. The Yucatán Peninsula sits atop a vast limestone shelf riddled with underground rivers and cenotes, the flooded sinkholes that the ancient Maya considered sacred portals to the underworld. Río Secreto, a semi-submerged cave system a short drive from town, offers guided tours through chambers of stalactites and still water that feel genuinely otherworldly; the extended version of the tour adds cycling, rappelling, and zip-lining through the jungle above, which gives a sense of how layered the landscape is once you move away from the beach. These are not manufactured attractions bolted onto a resort town but features of a geology that predates human settlement by millions of years.
