Playa del Carmen sits along the Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo, roughly an hour south of Cancún by road, and it has spent the past three decades transforming from a small fishing village into one of Mexico's most visited resort towns. These are not manufactured attractions bolted onto a resort town but features of a geology that predates human settlement by millions of years.
