Few cities announce themselves quite like Auckland does from the water. Arriving by sea, you see the Sky Tower rising above a narrow isthmus flanked by two harbours, the Waitemata to the north and the Manukau to the south, with the Hauraki Gulf stretching beyond into a scatter of volcanic islands. The central neighbourhoods reward time on foot. Ponsonby, running along its ridge to the west of the city centre, has long been the address of choice for independent restaurants and design studios. Parnell, one of Auckland's oldest suburbs, mixes Victorian villas with galleries and boutiques.
