Few cities announce themselves quite like Auckland does from the water. Arriving by sea, you see the Sky Tower rising above a narrow isthmus flanked by two harbours, the Waitemata to the north and the Manukau to the south, with the Hauraki Gulf stretching beyond into a scatter of volcanic islands.
