Puy du Fou is not a conventional theme park in any sense that the word usually implies. It was born from a regional passion project in the late 1970s, when a group of local volunteers staged an open-air night show, the Cinéscénie, drawing on the history of the Vendée itself, a region marked by the fierce counter-revolutionary wars of the 1790s that left a deep imprint on local identity. That founding production, performed on a lake with a cast of hundreds and elaborate pyrotechnics, still runs today and remains one of the largest son et lumière spectacles in existence. The park grew around it, adding daytime shows and themed villages that reconstruct Roman arenas, Viking longships, medieval jousting grounds, and Renaissance courts with a level of theatrical craft that has earned it repeated recognition at international tourism awards.
