Few places in rural western France command as much attention as Les Epesses, a small commune in the Vendée department whose name would barely register on a standard map were it not for one extraordinary reason. The village sits amid the gentle bocage landscape of the Pays de la Loire, a patchwork of hedgerows, farmland, and quiet lanes that gives little outward indication of what lies just beyond the treeline. Yet Les Epesses is home to Puy du Fou, a spectacle-driven theme park that has, over several decades, grown into one of the most visited attractions in France and one of the most acclaimed live entertainment venues in the world.

Puy du Fou is not a conventional theme park in any sense that the word usually implies. It was born from a regional passion project in the late 1970s, when a group of local volunteers staged an open-air night show, the Cinéscénie, drawing on the history of the Vendée itself, a region marked by the fierce counter-revolutionary wars of the 1790s that left a deep imprint on local identity. That founding production, performed on a lake with a cast of hundreds and elaborate pyrotechnics, still runs today and remains one of the largest son et lumière spectacles in existence. The park grew around it, adding daytime shows and themed villages that reconstruct Roman arenas, Viking longships, medieval jousting grounds, and Renaissance courts with a level of theatrical craft that has earned it repeated recognition at international tourism awards.
