Few capitals carry the weight of history quite like Phnom Penh. Positioned at the confluence of the Mekong, Tonle Sap, and Bassac rivers, the city has been the seat of the Khmer kingdom since the fifteenth century, and its geography still shapes daily life in ways that are immediately visible to any visitor. The broad riverfront promenade, known as Sisowath Quay, draws locals and travellers alike at dusk, when the light across the water turns the colour of old brass and the city exhales after the heat of the day.

The Royal Palace and its adjoining Silver Pagoda occupy a commanding position near the river and remain the symbolic centre of Cambodian national identity. Their gilded spires and carefully maintained grounds offer a striking counterpoint to the rawer energy of the streets beyond. A short distance away, the National Museum houses one of the finest collections of Khmer sculpture in the world, its terracotta pavilions arranged around a courtyard garden that feels genuinely removed from the city outside. These two sites alone account for a significant portion of what draws culturally minded visitors to the capital, and both reward unhurried attention.
