Warrnambool sits at the western end of the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia, where the Southern Ocean meets a coastline shaped by volcanic plains, river estuaries, and limestone cliffs. The whale-watching platform at Logan's Beach is one of the few places in the world where visitors can observe these animals from land at close range, and the season typically runs from around June through to September, though the whales follow their own schedule. Both the racing carnival and the whale season draw visitors from Melbourne and beyond, giving Warrnambool a rhythm that many regional cities of similar size do not have.
