Beja sits in the vast, sun-baked plains of the Alentejo, a region of southern Portugal where the horizon stretches unbroken for miles and the pace of life moves to a rhythm older than the nation itself. The town is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements on the Iberian Peninsula, known in Roman times as Pax Julia, a name that still echoes in the quiet dignity of its streets. The medieval castle keep, rising sharply above the low whitewashed rooftops, is the image most associated with Beja and for good reason. From its battlements the Alentejo plain unfolds in every direction, a patchwork of cork oak, olive groves, and wheat fields that turns gold in summer and a surprising green after the autumn rains. The keep is among the tallest in Portugal and its construction dates to the reign of Dom Dinis in the late thirteenth century, a period when the southern frontier was still being consolidated. Standing at the top on a clear morning, with the Serra de Grândola faint on the western edge of sight, is one of those experiences that requires no embellishment.
