Boulogne-sur-Mer sits on the Opal Coast of northern France, where the English Channel narrows and the light takes on that particular grey-silver quality painters have long associated with the far north. Walking the full circuit of the walls takes less than an hour and rewards the effort with views over the port, the river Liane, and on clear days the low outline of the English coast across the water. The upper town has a quietness to it that the lower streets do not, and the contrast between the two levels is one of the more distinctive things about spending time here.
