Om denna plats

Meteora is one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Greece, where a series of towering sandstone rock pillars rise from the plain of Thessaly in central Greece, roughly four hours from Athens by road. Perched atop these near-vertical formations are six Eastern Orthodox monasteries that remain active to this day, forming a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for both its natural geology and its spiritual heritage. The monasteries were founded between the 11th and 16th centuries by monks who sought isolation in the cliffs, and the buildings they constructed, clinging to the rock faces hundreds of metres above the valley floor, remain among the most visually striking examples of Byzantine architecture anywhere in the world.

Visitors travelling from Athens can reach Meteora by private transfer, arriving to explore the monastery complex and the surrounding trails on foot. Guided hiking tours take in the rock formations and the monastery interiors, where frescoes, manuscripts, and religious artefacts offer a detailed picture of monastic life across several centuries. The combination of geological spectacle and living religious tradition makes Meteora a singular destination in the Greek interior.
