Few German cities wear their geography as visibly as Freiburg im Breisgau. Tucked against the eastern edge of the Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg, with the Rhine plain stretching westward toward Alsace, the city sits at a crossroads that has shaped its character for centuries. The Münster, a sandstone Gothic cathedral that took roughly three hundred years to complete, rises above the old town's rooftops and remains the clearest expression of how long people have been investing in this place. The Schlossberg, the wooded hill immediately east of the centre, offers a straightforward walk to panoramic views over the terracotta rooftops and, on clear days, across to the Vosges mountains in France.
