Your guide to Puno

Your guide to Puno tickets

Puno sits at an elevation of roughly 3,800 metres above sea level on the western shore of Lake Titicaca, a city shaped as much by altitude and water as by anything built on dry land. It is the capital of the Puno Region in southern Peru, and it occupies a position that feels genuinely singular: the vast blue expanse of Titicaca stretches eastward toward Bolivia, and the surrounding altiplano rolls away in every direction under skies that, at this height, carry a particular quality of light that photographers and painters have long found difficult to reproduce faithfully.

The city is widely regarded as the folkloric capital of Peru, a reputation earned through centuries of Andean cultural continuity. The Feast of the Virgin of Candelaria, held each February, draws tens of thousands of visitors and is recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Masked dances, elaborate costumes, and brass bands fill the streets around the Plaza de Armas for days at a time. Outside of festival season, the cathedral on the main square, completed in the eighteenth century, remains one of the finest examples of Baroque mestizo architecture in the Andes, its stone facade carved with imagery that blends Catholic iconography with pre-Columbian motifs.
