Few buildings in the Iberian Peninsula carry the weight of history quite as visibly as the Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória, known to the world simply as the Batalha Monastery. The tomb of João I and his English queen, Philippa of Lancaster, daughter of John of Gaunt, sits within the Founder's Chapel and speaks to the medieval alliance between Portugal and England that remains the oldest active diplomatic treaty in the world. Standing beneath the vaulted ceiling of the chapter house, which spans nearly twenty metres without any intermediate support, gives a concrete sense of the engineering audacity that the late medieval period could produce when patronage and skill aligned.
