Tomar owes its existence to a military order. The Knights Templar chose this hilltop above the River Nabão in the twelfth century as the site of their Portuguese headquarters, and the town that grew beneath the castle walls has been shaped by that founding logic ever since. Few places in Portugal carry such a concentrated sense of medieval purpose, and fewer still have preserved it so legibly across eight centuries.

What began as a Templar stronghold was transformed after 1314, when the Order of Christ absorbed the Templars' assets and continued building on the same hill.
