Pen Pals Tickets: A Moving Story of Lifelong Friendship
Pen Pals is a touching off-Broadway drama at the DR2 Theatre that traces a 50-year friendship between two women who became pen pals at age 14 and never met in person. Written by Michael Griffo and based on a true story, the play features a rotating cast of prominent actresses bringing this correspondence to life on stage.
The Story
Bernie from Newark, New Jersey, and Mags from Sheffield, England, began exchanging letters as teenagers. Over five decades, they share every aspect of their lives through handwritten correspondence, from first loves and careers to marriages, children, loss, and aging. The play consists of the women reading these letters as they grow from girls to women before the audience's eyes, charting the rare and powerful bond that sustained them across an ocean.
Cast and Creative Team
Directed by SuZanne Barabas, Pen Pals features a rotating ensemble that has included Kate Burton, Donna Lynne Champlin, Marcia Cross, Megan Follows, Nancy McKeon, Pauletta Washington, and Emily Skinner, among others. The production partners with Susan G. Komen, donating 5% of ticket sales.
