Your guide to New Haven
New Haven sits at the northern end of Long Island Sound on the Connecticut coast, a city whose identity has been shaped in almost equal measure by one of the world's oldest universities and by a working-class industrial past that never quite let the place become merely academic. Yale University arrived in 1718 and has since given the city its Gothic Revival skyline, its world-class museums, and a permanent undercurrent of intellectual energy that you feel walking through the Old Campus or along Elm Street on any given afternoon.
The nine-square grid of the original colonial town plan, laid out in 1638, still organises the centre, and the New Haven Green remains the civic anchor it has always been. Three churches face the Green from its northern edge, each from a different era of American ecclesiastical architecture, and together they give the downtown a composure that larger cities rarely manage. From here, the neighbourhoods fan outward in distinct registers: Wooster Square, with its Italian-American heritage and its famous pizza culture, sits to the east; East Rock rises to the north, a residential neighbourhood built around the traprock ridge that gives the city one of its most recognisable silhouettes.
