Tomar owes its existence to a military order. The centrepiece is the Charola, a sixteen-sided rotunda modelled on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, which the knights would ride into on horseback to hear Mass. The famous Manueline window on the chapter house, encrusted with maritime rope, coral, and armillary spheres, is among the most reproduced images in Portuguese architecture, and standing before it in person makes clear why.
