Tentang tempat

Mengenai tempat ini

The Museo e Cripta dei Cappuccini stands on the Via Veneto in Rome, beneath the Church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini. The crypt itself comprises six small chapels whose walls, ceilings, and alcoves are decorated with the bones of approximately four thousand Capuchin friars, arranged over the course of more than a century into elaborate patterns of vertebrae, pelvises, and skulls. The effect is at once devotional and deeply arresting, reflecting the Capuchin tradition of meditating on mortality as a path to spiritual awareness. A Latin inscription at the crypt's entrance, attributed to an unknown friar, addresses the visitor directly on the subject of death and remembrance.

The museum above the crypt traces the history and spirituality of the Capuchin order through paintings, vestments, and religious artefacts, including a work attributed to Caravaggio. Visitors can explore both spaces with an audio guide, which provides historical and theological context for the bone decorations and the broader Franciscan tradition they represent.
