Tentang tempat

Mengenai tempat ini

Piazza Castello is one of Milan's most commanding public spaces, dominated by the vast bulk of the Castello Sforzesco, the fortified palace that has defined this corner of the city for centuries. Originally constructed as a Visconti stronghold and later expanded by the Sforza dynasty, the castle passed through the hands of Spanish governors, Napoleonic forces, and Austrian occupiers before the city of Milan reclaimed it as a cultural landmark in the late nineteenth century. The architect Luca Beltrami led its restoration, transforming the complex into a network of civic museums.

Today the castle houses several permanent collections, including the Museo della Pietà Rondanini, where Michelangelo's final, unfinished sculpture stands in a dedicated space within the former Spanish hospital wing. Visitors can enter the castle grounds and explore its courtyards, towers, and museum rooms, with audio-guided experiences available that trace both the building's turbulent political history and the remarkable story of the Rondanini Pietà, a work Michelangelo is said to have been carving just days before his death in 1564.
