About the venue

About this venue

Whitechapel is a district in the East End of London with a history that stretches back centuries, shaped by waves of immigration, industry, and social change. Its streets gained worldwide notoriety in the autumn of 1888, when a series of unsolved murders attributed to the figure known as Jack the Ripper drew intense press coverage and public fascination that has never fully faded. The area around Brick Lane, Gunthorpe Street, and the old Ten Bells pub retains much of the atmospheric Victorian streetscape that formed the backdrop to those events.

Today, Whitechapel is the setting for the 5 Women and Jack the Ripper Tour, a walking experience that reframes the 1888 murders around the lives of the five canonical victims, Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, and Mary Jane Kelly. Rather than focusing on the unknown perpetrator, the tour draws on historical records to restore the identities and stories of the women themselves, offering a more considered perspective on one of London's most enduring mysteries.
