About the venue

About this venue

The Arco da Rua Augusta stands at the southern end of Praça do Comércio, forming one of Lisbon's most recognisable landmarks where the city meets the Tagus estuary. The triumphal arch was built to commemorate the reconstruction of Lisbon following the catastrophic earthquake of 1755, and its sculpted figures represent Glory rewarding Valour and Genius, flanked by allegorical depictions of the Tagus and Douro rivers. The arch took over a century to complete, with the crowning sculptural group added in 1873.

Visitors can ascend to the viewpoint at the top of the arch, which offers a sweeping panorama across Praça do Comércio, the wide expanse of the Tagus, and the rooftops of the Baixa district stretching northward. The climb passes through the interior of the structure, revealing the arch's considerable scale before opening onto the terrace above the cornice. The Rua Augusta Arch Viewpoint experience gives a perspective on central Lisbon that few other vantage points in the lower city can match.
