Chelmsford sits at the confluence of the rivers Can and Chelmer in Essex, roughly thirty miles north-east of central London, and carries a quiet confidence that belies its modest size. It became England's newest city in 2012, granted that status as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, which gave formal recognition to a place that had long functioned as the commercial and administrative centre of one of England's most populous counties.
