Castelnuovo del Garda sits on a gentle ridge in the Veneto, looking west across the southern basin of Lake Garda towards the Lombard shore. The town itself is quiet and unhurried, a place of pale stone streets, a medieval castle keep, and vineyards that produce the local Bardolino and Custoza wines. For most of its history it was simply one of several small comuni arranged around the lake's lower reaches, known to locals for its market and its views rather than to any wider audience. That changed in 1975, when Gardaland opened on the lakeside land below the ridge and became, over the following decades, the most visited theme park in Italy.

The relationship between the old hilltop town and the resort complex a few kilometres away is one of the more curious contrasts in northern Italian tourism. Visitors who come for Gardaland rarely linger in the historic centre, and residents of Castelnuovo del Garda largely go about their lives at a remove from the crowds that descend on the park from spring through to autumn. Yet the two are administratively the same municipality, and the park's presence shapes everything from the local road network to the rhythm of the hospitality trade across the surrounding area.
