Few American cities carry their history as visibly as Santa Fe. The oldest state capital in the United States, it sits at more than seven thousand feet above sea level in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and that altitude shapes everything: the quality of the light, the colour of the adobe walls, the particular clarity of the sky at dusk. The Plaza at the centre of the city has been a gathering point for over four centuries. Around it, the Palace of the Governors, the oldest continuously occupied public building in the United States, stretches along the north side, its portal lined with Pueblo artisans selling jewellery and pottery as they have done for generations. The architecture throughout the historic core is governed by a strict adobe style, meaning the city presents an unusual visual coherence: earth-toned walls, flat roofs, and rounded corners that soften the light rather than reflect it. Canyon Road, a narrow street climbing east from the centre, is lined with galleries and studios, and it remains one of the most concentrated art markets in the country.
