La tua guida a Tirana
Tirana arrived late to the international travel conversation, and that timing has worked in its favour. While other Balkan capitals spent decades absorbing mass tourism, Albania's capital quietly rebuilt itself from one of Europe's most isolated communist states into a city of genuine curiosity, colour, and contradiction. The bunkers are still there, thousands of them, repurposed as cafes, art spaces, and storage rooms across the country. In the city itself, the legacy of Enver Hoxha's long dictatorship sits alongside pastel-painted apartment blocks, a raucous cafe culture, and a generation of Albanians who seem determined to make up for lost time.
The centre of Tirana organises itself around Skanderbeg Square, named for the fifteenth-century nobleman Gjergj Kastrioti, who united Albanian lords against Ottoman expansion and remains the country's defining national symbol. The square was heavily remodelled in recent years, and the National History Museum on its northern edge, with its vast mosaic facade, gives a useful grounding in a history that most visitors arrive knowing little about. From there, the Blloku neighbourhood, once the exclusive residential enclave of the communist elite and sealed off from ordinary citizens until 1991, is now the city's most fashionable quarter, dense with restaurants, bars, and independent shops. The contrast between what Blloku was and what it has become is one of Tirana's more quietly remarkable stories.
