Informazioni su questo luogo

The Barcelona Synagogue, known in Catalan as the Sinagoga Major de Barcelona, stands in the El Call neighbourhood of the Gothic Quarter, the site of the medieval Jewish quarter that flourished in the city from the early Middle Ages until the expulsion of Jewish communities from the Crown of Aragon in 1492. Archaeological evidence and architectural analysis suggest that the building's foundations may date back to Roman times, making it one of the oldest synagogue sites in Europe. Rediscovered and restored in the 1990s, the space now functions as both an active place of worship and a museum open to visitors.

An entry ticket grants access to the interior, where visitors can examine the original stonework, learn about the history of Jewish life in medieval Barcelona, and see the orientation of the ancient windows, which face east towards Jerusalem. The site offers a rare and direct connection to a chapter of Iberian history that was largely erased for centuries.
