Sumida Aquarium

Sumida Aquarium sits on the fifth and sixth floors of Tokyo Skytree Town, the commercial complex at the base of the world's tallest broadcasting tower in the Oshiage district of eastern Tokyo. The aquarium is designed around open, tank-free pools that allow visitors to observe jellyfish, penguins, and fur seals at unusually close range, with the penguin and fur seal habitats among the largest of their kind in any indoor urban aquarium in Japan. The interior design draws on the imagery of the open ocean and the historic waterways of the Sumida River, which has shaped this part of the city for centuries.

The facility places particular emphasis on the natural behaviours of its animals, with feeding sessions and keeper talks forming a regular part of the daily programme.
