Votre guide de Hong Kong
Few cities compress so much geography, history, and appetite into so small a space as Hong Kong. The territory occupies a cluster of islands and a peninsula pressed against the southern coast of Guangdong province, and the tension between those landmasses, separated by one of the world's great natural harbours, has shaped everything about the place: its economy, its skyline, its character, and the way its residents move through the day. Victoria Harbour is not merely a backdrop. It is the reason the city exists, and standing at the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront after dark, watching the towers of Hong Kong Island throw their reflections across the water, is one of those experiences that resists easy description. A night cruise on the harbour, with Kowloon on one side and the Central district on the other, gives a perspective that no rooftop bar quite replicates.
The island side rewards time on foot. Central and Sheung Wan bleed into each other along the tram lines, with colonial-era facades sitting beside glass towers and incense coiling out of temple doorways. The Mid-Levels escalator, the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world, climbs through SoHo and connects the financial district to the residential streets above it in a way that feels entirely particular to Hong Kong. Higher still, the Peak Tram has been hauling passengers up the 552-metre slope of Victoria Peak since 1888, and the combination of the tram ride, the Sky Terrace 428 viewing platform, and Madame Tussauds at the summit makes for a morning that covers a surprising amount of ground without requiring a single taxi.
