Few Spanish cities wear their history as visibly as Alicante. The Castillo de Santa Bárbara rises from a sheer rocky outcrop directly above the Mediterranean shoreline, its ramparts dating back to Moorish occupation and later expanded under Aragonese rule, giving the city a silhouette that has oriented sailors and travellers for centuries.
