Few English county towns wear their history as visibly as Shrewsbury. The Shropshire capital sits within a near-complete loop of the River Severn, a geographical quirk that shaped its medieval street plan and left it with one of the most intact timber-framed townscapes in the country. Charles Darwin was born here in 1809, and the town has quietly celebrated that connection ever since, with his statue seated outside the old school building on Castle Gates where he was once a pupil.
