Tietoa paikasta
The Duke of York Monument stands at the foot of Waterloo Place in London, where Carlton House Terrace meets the steps descending to St James's Park. The column was erected in honour of Prince Frederick, Duke of York, second son of King George III and commander-in-chief of the British Army. Designed by Benjamin Dean Wyatt and completed in 1834, it rises to approximately 38 metres and is topped by a bronze statue of the Duke cast by Richard Westmacott. The monument was funded by a one-day deduction from the pay of every soldier in the British Army, a fact that gives it a particular place in military history.
The column sits at a natural crossroads between some of London's most significant royal and ceremonial landmarks. Visitors exploring this part of the city can combine a stop at the monument with a ticket to the Buckingham Palace State Rooms, paired with a Royal Walking Tour that traces the surrounding streets and their connections to the British monarchy.
