Belém Tower on a 16th-century fortified landmark on the northern bank of the Tagus River in Lisbon, built between 1516 and 1521 as part of Portugal's coastal defence system. Designed in the Manueline style by Francisco de Arruda, the tower is one of the most architecturally detailed structures from Portugal's Age of Discovery, and entry tickets give access to its full interior and exterior terraces. Among the Lisbon attractions concentrated in the Belém district, it stands alongside Jerónimos Monastery as a centrepiece of the waterfront.

Visitors move through the tower at their own pace, passing the Governor's Hall, the Kings' Hall, a small chapel, and the defensive bastions that once guarded the harbour entrance. The upper terraces offer open views across the Tagus and the Belém waterfront. Architectural details throughout include maritime stone carvings, Gothic tracery, and the noted rhinoceros gargoyle on the northwest bastion. An optional audio guide is available for those wanting historical context at each level. Tickets can also be combined with Jerónimos Monastery entry, allowing both landmarks to be covered in a single visit. Entry is timed and validated by voucher or printed confirmation at the tower entrance.

Arrival and timing

Present your voucher or ticket confirmation at the designated entrance to have it validated before you enter. Arriving early in the day is advisable, as the tower attracts steady visitor numbers and the narrow interior staircases can become congested during peak hours. Once inside, you are free to explore at your own pace.

Getting around the venue

The tower is a compact, multi-storey structure with steep, narrow staircases connecting its interior halls and upper terraces. Wear comfortable, flat-soled shoes, as the stone steps and floors can be uneven and slippery. The route takes you through the Governor's Hall, Kings' Hall, the chapel, and the defensive bastions before reaching the open terraces above.

During your visit

  • Photography for personal use is generally permitted in the open areas of the tower.
  • Keep noise to a considerate level in the enclosed interior spaces.
  • The tower is a historic monument, so touching or leaning on carved stonework and decorative elements is not permitted.
  • Check any posted notices at the entrance regarding food, drink, and bag policies on the day of your visit.
