Acerca de este lugar

The Conciergerie occupies a commanding position on the Île de la Cité, rising from the banks of the Seine at the very centre of Paris. Once the seat of royal administration under the Capetian kings, it later served as one of the most notorious prisons of the French Revolution, holding Marie Antoinette among thousands of others who awaited trial before the Revolutionary Tribunal. The medieval Gothic halls, including the vast Salle des Gens d'Armes, survive largely intact and rank among the finest examples of fourteenth-century civil architecture in France.

Today the Conciergerie operates as a national monument and museum under the care of the Centre des Monuments Nationaux. Visitors move through the great vaulted chambers, the reconstructed cell of Marie Antoinette, and the sombre corridors that once separated the condemned from the living world outside. The building's layered history, from Capetian palace to revolutionary prison to public monument, makes it one of the most historically charged sites anywhere in the French capital.
