Saint-Ours sits in the Puy-de-Dôme department of the Auvergne region in central France, a quiet commune whose name would mean little to most travellers were it not for one remarkable fact: it stands at the foot of an extinct volcanic landscape that ranks among the most geologically significant in Europe. The dominant reason visitors find their way to Saint-Ours is Vulcania, the European Park of Volcanism that opened in 2002 and was conceived by former French president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing as a way of bringing the science of volcanology to a broad public. The park is built partly underground, its architecture deliberately echoing the crater forms of the surrounding landscape, and it combines large-format cinema, immersive rides, and scientific exhibitions to explain how volcanic forces have shaped the Earth. It draws families and curious adults in roughly equal measure, and on a clear day the drive up to the site offers views across the Limagne plain that alone justify the journey.
