The Ottoman fort, built in the sixteenth century and later used by Napoleon's forces during the French campaign in Egypt, has been restored and functions as a small museum covering the town's trading and pilgrimage history. The waterfront promenade offers a straightforward view of the Red Sea that feels genuinely local rather than staged for visitors, with fishing boats moored alongside the occasional dive vessel.
