Few places on earth carry as much visual weight as Santorini. The caldera cliffs, the white cubic houses stacked against blue-domed churches, the sea dropping away hundreds of metres below the rim of a collapsed ancient volcano: these images have circled the globe so many times that arriving here can feel like stepping into a photograph you have already memorised. Santorini is the largest island of a small archipelago formed by one of the most violent volcanic eruptions in recorded prehistory, an event that reshaped the Aegean around 1600 BCE and may have contributed to the decline of the Minoan civilisation on Crete. The caldera that remains is not merely a scenic backdrop but an active geological system, and the dark volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni sit at its centre, still venting sulphurous gases and warming the surrounding sea at certain points along the shoreline. That geological drama is the single thread running through almost everything the island offers, from its unusual black and red beaches to the mineral-rich hot springs that draw swimmers out from tour boats anchored in the caldera.
