Din guide til Denpasar
Denpasar sits at the southern end of Bali, the administrative capital of an island that has drawn travellers for generations, yet the city itself is often passed through rather than paused in. That is partly by design: the real pull of southern Bali radiates outward from Denpasar in every direction, and the city functions as the practical hub from which the island's more celebrated landscapes become reachable. The Ngurah Rai International Airport lies just south of the city centre, the port of Benoa handles much of the sea traffic, and the old commercial core around Jalan Gajah Mada has been the island's trading heart since long before mass tourism arrived.
The city does have its own cultural weight, though it rarely announces itself loudly. The Bali Museum on Puputan Square preserves royal pavilions and temple architecture spanning several centuries of Balinese history, and the square itself commemorates the 1906 puputan, the ritual mass sacrifice in which the Balinese royal court chose death over Dutch colonial surrender. That history gives Denpasar a gravity that the beach resorts to the south do not share. The Jagatnatha Temple beside the museum remains an active place of worship, and the markets around Pasar Badung, one of the largest traditional markets in Bali, offer a version of the island that has nothing to do with tourism infrastructure.
