About the venue

About this venue

The Fundació Antoni Tàpies occupies a converted nineteenth-century Modernista publishing house on Carrer d'Aragó in Barcelona's Eixample district. The building, designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner and completed in 1880, originally served as the headquarters of the Editorial Montaner i Simon. Its brick and iron facade is crowned by Antoni Tàpies's own wire sculpture, "Núvol i Cadira" (Cloud and Chair), which has become one of the more recognisable rooftop landmarks in the city.

The foundation was established by Tàpies himself in 1984 to promote the study and understanding of modern and contemporary art. Its permanent collection centres on the work of Tàpies, one of the most significant European artists of the postwar period, whose large-scale canvases and assemblages draw on matter painting, Catalan symbolism, and Eastern philosophy. Temporary exhibitions extend the programme to other artists working in dialogue with those themes. Visitors can currently purchase tickets to explore the museum and its collection through Museu Tàpies admission.
