Columbus Monument

The Columbus Monument stands at the foot of La Rambla in Barcelona, where the boulevard meets the old port. Erected to commemorate the 1888 Universal Exhibition, the column rises 60 metres and is topped by a bronze statue of Christopher Columbus pointing out to sea. The structure was designed by Gaietà Buïgas and has since become one of the most recognisable landmarks on the Barcelona waterfront.

The Columbus Monument Lookout takes visitors up through the interior of the column to a circular viewing cabin at the top, offering a panoramic perspective across the harbour, Barceloneta, Montjuïc, and the Gothic Quarter rooftops. The ascent is made by a small lift housed within the shaft of the monument. From this vantage point the relationship between the old city and the sea becomes immediately clear, making the lookout a rewarding way to understand Barcelona's geography and its long maritime history.
