About the venue

About this venue

The Sloten Windmill is Amsterdam's last working polder windmill, standing on the western edge of the city in the quiet district of Sloten. Unlike the preserved mills found in open-air museums, this windmill remains an active part of the local water management system, pumping water from the surrounding polders just as its predecessors did for centuries. Visitors can step inside to see the original wooden gearing and millstones, climb the narrow internal stairs, and watch the great sails turn when the wind allows.

The mill also functions as a small museum dedicated to the history of Dutch water control and the role windmills played in keeping the low-lying land habitable. The Windmill Amsterdam Sloten experience gives guests a guided look at the machinery and the story of the polder landscape that shaped this part of North Holland. It is a rare chance to encounter a genuinely operational piece of Amsterdam's engineering heritage rather than a static exhibit.
