Sa Pa 指南
Few places in Vietnam announce themselves quite as dramatically as Sa Pa. Perched at more than 1,500 metres above sea level in the Hoang Lien Son range of northwestern Vietnam, this small town in Lao Cai province sits beneath Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina at 3,143 metres. The surrounding landscape is one of the most photographed in Southeast Asia, a cascade of terraced rice fields carved into steep hillsides over centuries by the Hmong, Dao, Tay, and Giay peoples whose villages still dot the valleys below.
The town itself occupies a ridge above the Muong Hoa Valley, and on clear mornings the views across to the Hoang Lien Son peaks are extraordinary. Cloud rolls in fast here, and the light shifts constantly, which is part of what gives Sa Pa its particular atmosphere. The French colonial administration established a hill station here in the early twentieth century, and traces of that era survive in the town's layout and a handful of older stone buildings, though Sa Pa has changed enormously since tourism began to grow in the 1990s. The market area near the central square remains a genuine point of exchange between the town and the surrounding communities, and Saturday night draws visitors and local minority groups alike.
