Din guide til Croix

Din billettguide til Croix

Croix sits just east of Roubaix in the French Flemish borderlands, a commune whose quiet residential character belies the architectural treasure it contains. The town is not a conventional tourist destination, and that is precisely what gives a visit here its particular quality. There are no grand squares competing for attention, no well-worn tourist circuits. What draws visitors to Croix is, almost entirely, one building, and that building is extraordinary enough to justify the journey on its own terms.

Villa Cavrois was commissioned in the late 1920s by the textile industrialist Paul Cavrois and completed in 1932 to designs by Robert Mallet-Stevens, one of the defining figures of French modernist architecture. The result is a long, horizontal composition in yellow brick, its geometry severe and deliberate, its proportions calibrated with the kind of confidence that only comes from total conviction. Mallet-Stevens designed not just the structure but the interiors, the furniture, the gardens, and the smallest fixtures, treating the whole as a unified work. For decades after the Cavrois family left, the villa fell into serious disrepair and was subject to vandalism and stripping. Its rescue, led by the Centre des monuments nationaux following acquisition by the French state in 2001, took years of painstaking restoration work before the house reopened to the public in 2015. The entry ticket grants access to a building that now reads almost exactly as Mallet-Stevens intended it, which is a remarkable achievement given how close it came to being lost entirely.
