Few places in the Mediterranean carry their history as visibly as Chania. The old Venetian harbour, with its lighthouse standing at the end of a curved stone breakwater, frames a skyline that layers Minoan prehistory, Byzantine churches, Ottoman minarets, and Venetian arsenals into a single, walkable panorama. The city sits on the north-western coast of Crete, Greece's largest island, and has served as a significant settlement since at least the Bronze Age, when the Minoan civilisation flourished across the island and left traces that archaeologists are still piecing together today.

The old town is where most visitors find their bearings. The Splantzia quarter, with its plane-tree-shaded square and narrow lanes, has a quieter character than the harbour front, and the covered market, built in the shape of a cross at the turn of the twentieth century, remains a working hub rather than a purely tourist fixture. The Kastelli hill, rising just behind the harbour, is the oldest continuously inhabited part of the city, and excavations there have repeatedly uncovered Minoan remains beneath the medieval and Ottoman layers above them. Walking between these districts takes no more than twenty minutes, yet the density of accumulated time is considerable.
